Data Protection Conference 2011
With identify theft is rife in the UK and Europe the value of personal data has surged. Mirroring this growth has been the development of further data protection laws to ensure that individuals’ privacy is not abused nor information about them exploited. Against this backdrop Lord McNally, Minister of State for Justice and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords has launched a review of the UK Data protection directive and the EU equivalent.
In the year that the new Data Protection laws are in place, where fines have recently increased from £5,000 to £500,000 – Shredall Scotland are to attend the Data Protection 2011 Conference on Thursday 24th February at The Royal College of Surgeons, Quincentenary Hall in Edinburgh to really understand the operation and impact of such laws. It is a fundamental requirement for businesses, such as Shredall Scotland operating in this increasingly regulated area – not least in light of reviews at the UK and EU level. It is imperative that organisations in Scotland keep up to date with data protection responsibilities and changing legislation.
The call for evidence sought views on how the Data Protection Act and European Directive on Data Protection are working, the impact of the Act on individuals and businesses and whether the current powers and penalties of the Information Commissioner should be strengthened. The exercise was launched to provide the Government with a solid evidence base in negotiations with the European Union over a new European data protection instrument, but is also likely to form a part of the negotiations with the European Commission over the UK’s implementation of the existing Data Protection Directive.
This event will be extremely beneficial for Shredall Scotland as it will have strong emphasis on learning and discussing data protection issues with their customers which could affect their business and the work they do. The conference will provide an insight on how to learn and how to comply with the new regulations and ensure Shredall Scotland is educating it’s customers with up to date legislation.
