Robin Hood Half Marathon 2009

On September 13th 2009 The Shredall Harriers will be entering a team to take part in the Robin Hood Half Marathon. Whether walking or running we plan to put in 100% effort to raise funds for The Fletcher Ward at City Hospital to provide facilities and amenities to benefit patients being treated  for disorders including leukaemia, lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and myeloma. (http://www.nuhcharity.org.uk/events-calendar.php)

To add a little competitive spirit we are challenging our customers and local groups to field teams to compete against us in the first annual Shredall Charity Cup (the cup is being made by a local primary school using non-confidential (!) shredded paper).

The winners will be the team with the fastest 2 runners past the post and there will also be a prize for the fastest 2 speed-walkers. With The Shredall Harriers training hard we think we are going to be the team to beat. White Watch at Carlton Fire Station has already risen to the challenge. Entering The White Watch Wanderers, a team of 5 runners and walkers, they will be fundraising for The Anthony Nolan Trust and the Firefighters Charity. While supporting their chosen charities will certainly spur them on, they will definitely have their eye on the prize.

If you would be interested in entering a team to challenge us please do not hesitate to call Becky on 01159656300, however if you are reluctant to dust off your running shoes but would still like to support us please visit our fundraising website at http://www.justgiving.com/Shredall. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor The Shredall Harriers. Nottingham University Hospitals Charity (The Fletcher Ward) gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

If you want to see how The Shredall Harriers and White Watch Wanderers perform on the day please visit this page after 13th September. But in the meantime wish us luck, hope our blisters are few and that our already tired and aching muscles do not get the better of us!

A big thank you in anticipation of your help with our campaign and happy running to all those taking part in the Half Marathon this year.

Lloyd's Lobby

Industry pioneer Lloyd Williams, Managing Director of Shredall, has this week chaired a meeting at the House of Commons with Nigel Evans MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Identity Fraud. Heading the UK contingent from the information destruction sector, Lloyd brought industry concerns directly to the table, questioning Nigel Evans about the impact of the Data Protection Act and the role of the Information Commissioner.

Troubled at the lack of awareness in the business and public sector of their obligations towards privacy, the lobby group want to challenge current legislation and influence policy to ensure the security of employee and customer identity. Paramount to this is the need for businesses to take the disposal of their confidential information more seriously. While the Data Protection Act aims to safeguard individuals, there is concern that it is not actively enforced and that there is not a significant level of Government awareness with regard the secure destruction of confidential waste.

The meeting with Nigel Evans was a significant step for the lobby group who questioned the MP about:
•increasing the enforcement powers of the ICO
•imposing fines for negligent handling of confidential material
•making the negligent handling of confidential material a criminal offence
•legislation and regulation of the document destruction industry
•the influence of lobbying by trade associations
•an industry specific trade association working directly with the ICO on educational material
•how his office handled its confidential waste

While the answers may be forthcoming, actions certainly speak louder than words and Lloyd and his industry associates want to clarify their concerns, work together as a unified trade body and engage with MPs and the business community to make the country aware that the casual disposal of personal details is completely unacceptable.

‘Today’s meeting was a complete breakthrough for our industry,’ commented Lloyd. ‘We have finally come face to face with an MP who has a direct influence over the issues that concern us. We have challenged Nigel for answers, but as an industry we need to challenge ourselves. We need to be clear about what it is that we want from Government and what we can do to make this happen. Working as one unified national trade association should be our first step and we need to go out to individual confidential waste destruction companies and ask them what they really want from membership of such a body and how they want to be represented going forward. Only then can we become the influential force needed to drive through the legislative changes to stop Identity Fraud in its tracks.’

Shredall Raises Its NAID International Profile

Shredall is pleased to announce that it has become the latest company outside of the US to achieve NAID AAA certification. This brings the total number of NAID Certifications outside of North America to 13, in locations as diverse as Hong Kong, Iceland, Australia and South Africa.

The program is offered on a voluntary basis to all NAID members who offer information destruction services. NAID members seek certification audits for both Mobile and Plant-based operations in paper or printed media, micro-media or computer hard-drive destruction. The program establishes standards for a secure destruction process including areas such as security, employee hiring and screening, operational destruction process and insurance. The certification is effective for one calendar year and Shredall will certainly be keen to renew the accreditation in June 2010.

NAID, the National Association for Information Destruction, is the international, non-profit trade association specifically working for the information destruction industry. NAID's mission is to educate business, industry and government of the importance of destroying discarded information and the value of contract destruction services.

SHREDALL is a longtime NAID member, and Managing Director Lloyd Williams has attended the NAID Annual Conference for many years. The NAID Certification of SHREDALL is significant as Lloyd is a founding member of the BSIA Information Destruction Sector and viewed by many on both sides of the pond as an industry leader.

While Shredall's compliances already include adherence to the British Standards listed below, the NAID certification just adds weight to the company's responsible attitude towards the industry and it's commitment to best practice in all its operations:
• BS 8470:2006 Secure destruction of confidential material - Code of Practice
• BS 7858:2006 Security screening of individuals employed in a security environment - Code of Practice

June 5th Environmental Resolutions For The Workplace

‘Your Planet Needs You – UNite to Combat Climate Change’

A 10 Step Office Programme

On June 5th 2009 Shredall employees will show their commitment to combat climate change by following the 10 Step Programme below. Going forward we hope to re-think how we work in the office and do all that we can to make a difference long-term. Following these 10 steps is a great start but Shredall will be asking employees to continue to make suggestions for the workplace and that these ideas will follow them home:

  1. share newspapers at lunchtime
  2. fill the kettle for the number of employees needing a drink only
  3. unplug all items that are not in use
  4. don't staple unless you have to
  5. turn computer monitors off at lunchtime
  6. use waste paper (not confidential obviously!) as scrap paper
  7. bring in house plants to remove pollutants in the air
  8. make double sided photocopies where possible
  9. turn off the air-conditioning, open windows and doors if it is a hot day
  10. bring your lunch to work in re-usable containers (no plastic/foil wrap)

If you have any further suggestions/ideas/recommendations please do not hesitate to email Becky at becky@shredall.co.uk. We hope to have a page on our website dedicated to our World Environment Day Resolutions and by 2010 we plan to double the 10 Step Programme.

From Tiny Acorns Grow.......

On a blustery afternoon in May, a small team of willing volunteers from Shredall and Carbon Projects visited Broadley Tree Nursery in Diptford, to assist the regular volunteers who meet weekly to help with site maintainance and tree cultivation.

Broadley is Moor Trees' (a Devon based woodland charity) most rural nursery with stunning views of Dartmoor and the surrounding countryside.  The charity works with local individuals, groups and businesses to collect local seed, to grow local provenance trees in their community tree nurseries before planting them in local woodlands.

The nursery is the centre for the processing of all Moor Trees’ seed which are sown on site. The seedlings are transplanted into root trainers and cared for before being distributed to nursery beds on the other nursery sites in their first winter.

This work is done by a regular Tuesday group of willing volunteers who process the seed and keep the whole site weeded and well organized. On this particular Tuesday Becky, Robin and Sarah joined the group and got their hands dirty planting, weeding, mulching and generally enjoying the company and location. Many thanks to Bea and her team for their welcome, their direction, the cake, the gloves, the kneelers (although my knees were still caked in mud by the end of the afternoon!) and their dedication to the fantastic scheme.

Shredall is continually keen to support such projects and as such has an on-going tree planting policy and commitment. For further information on the Broadley Nursery please click here and for further information about Shredall and Carbon Projects involvement please click here.

Plant for the Planet - Billion Tree Campaign

Under the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign communities, organizations, businesses and governments are being encouraged to plant trees and enter their tree planting pledges on the web site (click here). The aim is to plant at least one billion trees worldwide annually. The scheme unites the thousands of tree planting schemes around the world, some people planting just one tree while other organisations plant millions.

Shredall has registered its participation and has pledged to plant a tree for each new customer in 2009. The responsibility lies with Shredall to arrange for the tree planting and ongoing maintenance of those trees and The Plant for the Planet campaign encourages the planting of indigenous trees and trees that are appropriate to the local environment. With this in mind, Shredall has enlisted the help of Carbon Projects (for further information please click here) who have provided a link to a charity in Devon which works with volunteers to plant thousands of local provenance trees grown from locally collected seed in community tree nurseries.

'The loss of natural forests around the world contributes more to global emissions each year than the transport sector...' So Please join Shredall to combat this threat and either join the campaign yourself by clicking here or use Shredall for the destruction of your confidential waste and we will plant a tree on your behalf.

"The best friend on Earth of man is the tree. When we use the tree respectfully and economically,  we have one of the greatest resources of the Earth."

World Environment Day 2009

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5th and has become the United Nations arena for highlighting awareness of the environment. The theme for World Environment Day 2009 is ‘Your Planet Needs You – UNite to Combat Climate Change,’ and while the United Nations hopes to bring nations together to agree on strategies to combat climate change, we as individuals are reminded of what we can do to help.

As a company, Shredall is committed to reducing its environmental impact and carbon footprint, and by offering paper recycling and tree planting it is also helping it’s customers to make a difference.

The World Environment Day website offers many tips and suggestions on how even small changes can be made to help the planet and on June 5th 2009 Shredall are planning to adopt it’s own strategy for the day to include newspaper sharing in the crew room and using Tupperware to carry lunches in (avoiding the use of Clingfilm and other disposable packaging). Please re-visit the site next week to see our final strategy which, long-term, we hope everyone at Shredall will adopt for life. For more information please click the following link World Environment Day 2009

THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE

Peace and quiet was achieved for every Shredall employee as Becky kept quiet for 10 hours on Red Nose Day. Thoughts of making it a weekly event are under discussion!

SHRED NOSE DAY - doing something funny for money

This year the Shredall employees will be looking forward to the sounds of silence as the marketing department's resident chatterbox, Becky Perry, will be conducting a sponsored silence. With an opinion on everything can Becky be silenced for the full 10 hours?

So far Becky is not so sure how to take her friends and co-workers offers of sponsorship. It seems that they are more than happy to pay her to shut up and some have even suggested that she lengthen the duration of the event. Rumour has it that her husband has offered an astronomical sum if she can keep zipped up until Christmas! Most people who know her would settle for 10 minutes.

All proceeds of course will be going to the Red Nose Day appeal and Becky's initial goal is to raise enough money to 'feed and care for one orphan for four months and show them that they are not alone in the world. Over 12 million children in Africa have been orphaned by AIDS and most are left to live in desperate poverty.'

For more information on this wonderful fund raising day please visit   http://www.rednoseday.com/  and to find out if Becky is successful in her challenge please visit this page next week.

SEEING THE FOREST AND THE TREES

Shredall is pleased to announce its new working partnership with Carbon Projects, a UK based company assisting businesses to offset their carbon emissions and promoting reforestation around the world.

In 2008 Shredall has committed to plant over 400 trees by way of a thank you to its loyal customers. Having worked hard to achieve sound environmental accreditations this next step will further assist the groups green credentials and prove Shredall’s responsible approach to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions. Although this represents a huge challenge, Shredall is determined to make a positive impact and helps its customers to do the same.

Environmentally Sound

Shredall is pleased to announce certification to ISO 14001:2004 after a successful two-day audit of its environmental management system in June 2008.

This highly-valued accreditation sits side-by-side with ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 which are both already held by the company.

Lloyd Williams, Shredall’s Managing Director, explains:

“ISO 14001 will provide added reassurance to our customers that Shredall is mindful of its environmental aspects and impacts at all levels and working towards reducing or enhancing them where possible. We are focussing hard on our carbon footprint, exploring new technologies, and monitoring our business consumptions. As a company, our environmental awareness and commitment to sustainability has been reinforced by working towards this standard”.

“However, the nature of our business means that we also bring something very positive to our customers. We continue to work towards a 100% recycling target for their waste and to source innovative recycling routes for unusual confidential waste streams. ISO 14001 is definitely good news for all concerned!”

Lloyd also believes that Shredall is in a unique position as a member of the BSIA’s Information Destruction Section in possession of accreditation for its quality, health & safety, and environmental management systems, and hopes that this combination of certification will be an attractive package to the public and private sector alike.
