Paper Recycling - the Facts

Shredall are committed to helping the environment, which is why we recycle 100% of the paper that comes to us for shredding. The following paper recycling facts and statistics show why this is so important to us.

  • Paper is a biodegradable material; this means that when it goes to landfill it will rot; bacteria will form and produce methane. This is a powerful greenhouse gas that is 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide and contributes to climate change. Shredall currently recycle 100% of all office papers shredded.

  • Manufacturing brand new paper uses more energy than making recycled paper, but varies dependent on the grade or type of paper being made. Lower quality paper, such as newsprint and packaging paper, require less energy to manufacture than office paper.

  • It can take just seven days for a newspaper to go through the recycling process and be transformed into recycled newsprint which is used to make the majority of Britain’s national daily newspapers.

  • Recycling 1 short ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7 thousand gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity - enough energy to power the average home for six months.

  • Paper recycling has been around as long as paper itself. Shredall have always recognized the environmental and economic benefits of recycling shredded documents.

  • It takes 48 full grown trees to make roughly 500 rolls of toilet paper and it takes about 384 trees to make the toilet paper that one man uses within his lifetime.

  • An average tree weighs 1,000 pounds which would yield 450 pounds of pulp, assuming a 90% converting yield, approximately 810 rolls of toilet paper would be produced from a single tree.
